The F Visa is for students who are enrolled in a full-time course of academic study, at a school approved by the INS.
The F visa allows you to come to the U.S. temporarily to study. F visas are available for the entire range of studies, from primary school to secondary school (i.e., high school), through college or university.
In order to obtain an F Visa you must be admitted as a student by a school in the U.S. You will also have to show that you have the financial resources to come to attend school without working and still pay for your school tuition, fees, and other living expenses. Under certain circumstances you will be able to work while you are in the U.S., however you still must show that you are financially stable without working.
With F status, you are allowed to remain in the U.S. for the duration of your studies. As long as you attend school full-time and continue to make normal progress toward the completion of your program or degree, you will remain in valid status.
The F-2 Visa is also available for spouse and children of an F-1 holder.
